Sweet! The Life Story of a Dominican Pitcher Screens at the DR Embassy

Washington DC – The last GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase Embassy Edition of 2016 screened the film ‘Sugar’, a sports drama directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, that follows the story of Miguel Santos, a. k. a. Sugar, a Dominican pitcher from San Pedro de Macorís, struggling to make it to the big leagues and pull himself and his family out of poverty. Gretchen Pockels, Cultural Attaché  from the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, and María Victoria Abreu, DREFF Programming Director, introduced the film and accompanied the audience gathered at the Embassy.

“GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase Embassy Edition is a special chapter of GFDD’s program Dominican Film Showcase, to quarterly screen a wonderful selection of Dominican films in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Embassy in the United States. This initiative, born in 2016, is the product of a close collaboration between the two entities and the Dominican Republic Film Commission (DGCINE for its acronym in Spanish).”, explained Abreu.

About the movie

Playing professionally at a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, Miguel finally gets his break when he advances to the United States’ baseball minor league system; but when his play on the mound falters, he begins to question the single-mindedness of his life’s ambition.
