‘Flor de Azúcar’ Represents Dominican Filmmaking at the Ibero-American Film Showcase 2017 in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. – The Dominican film ‘Flor de Azúcar’, by the award winning director Fernando Báez, was screened successfully at the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States. The event, co-hosted by GFDD as part of its Dominican Film Showcase initiative, was part of the Ibero-American Film Showcase 2017, an annual celebration by the Network of Ibero-American Cultural Attachés in the capital of the United States (Red Iberoamericana de Agregados Culturales / Ibero-America Cultura DC). This film was pre-nominated to represent the Dominican Republic in the 2017 Academy Awards and has been recognized by other international forums as well.

Gretchen Pockels, Cultural Attaché of the Dominican Republic in Washington DC, gave the welcoming remarks and presented the film to the audience. During the screening, attendees enjoyed light refreshments provided by the Embassy, and after the film was over, participants discussed it in detail.

This GFDD initiative contributes to the dissemination of the best contemporary films produced in the Dominican Republic, by Dominican filmmakers, about Dominican topics. In its mission to promote  knowledge and appreciation of Dominican culture as well as to inspire Dominican filmmakers to reach out internationally, GFDD partners with institutions worldwide and creates opportunities for wide audiences to learn about Dominican culture, enjoy its art, and engage in conversations with filmmakers.

About the Film
Flor de Azúcar tells the story of a young farmer who is forced to flee for involuntarily killing an abusive guard. After an entire year hiding in a remote fishermen island, he decides to return to his countryside and reunite with his wife and daughters. Based on the story by Juan Bosch “La Nochebuena de Encarnación Mendoza “, the film is a cry for freedom, love and justice, with a strong human and cultural component. Flor de Azúcar, by the award-winning director and producer Fernando Báez, competed for  Best Foreign Film nomination at the 89th Academy Awards.
